Colchester United made their home at Layer Road from their founding in 1937 but the ground was originally the home of Colchester Town. United played their last match at Layer Road at the end of the 2007-2008 season, moving into their new digs at Colchester Community Stadium. The ground was given to the Ministry of Defence during the Second World War and was taken over by the Colchester Garrison. The attendance record for a Colchester United match was 19,072 who saw a 1948 FA Cup First Round match against Reading. The match was postponed before the end of the first half by fog.
