Colchester United made their home at Layer Road from their founding in 1937 but the ground was originally the home of Colchester Town. United played their last match at Layer Road at the end of the 2007-2008 season, moving into their new digs at Colchester Community Stadium. The ground was given to the Ministry of Defence during the Second World War and was taken over by the Colchester Garrison. The attendance record for a Colchester United match was 19,072 who saw a 1948 FA Cup First Round match against Reading. The match was postponed before the end of the first half by fog. During the 1980's Layer Road was beginning to show its age. Improved safety regulations and more rigorous enforcement necessitated the closure of some parts of the ground. Renovations in the 1990's saw the ground into the 21st century but long term plans saw the construction of a new stadium and Layer Road was demolished in 2010.
