Roots Hall was constructed by Southend United in 1955 and remained the newest ground in the Football League until 1988. The most striking feature of the ground was the South Bank Terrace, a 72-stepped concrete slope topped with floodlight towers. Unfortunately financial troubles forced the club to sell part of the land on which the terrace stood and it was cut down to approximately 1/3 the size.
