Stoke City’s Victoria Ground was the home of the club for almost 120 years (1878 to 1997). Stoke returned to the Football League in 1919, and the ground underwent almost continuous improvement according to the standards of the time. Capacity peaked at just over 51,000, and record attendance was reached against Arsenal in 1937. The post-World War Two era saw more work on the stadium, including floodlights, a new stand and concrete in the standing paddock. The Victoria Ground was badly damaged in January 1976 when hurricane force winds hit the area.
