When the Great Britain went to war in September 1939 austerity measures ceased most construction work in the country but not at Villa Park. Work on Villa Park was allowed to continue until its completion in April 1940. Part of the ground was used as an air raid shelter whilst the army took over some space. The ground itself sustained bomb damage to the Witton Lane Stand.
