Burden Park was home to Bolton Wanderers for 102 years until their move to the Reebok Stadium in 1997. The peak capacity of the ground was 70,000, although that capacity was surpassed by as much as 15,000 the day of the Burnden Park Disaster.
On March 9th, 1946, an FA Cup quarter-final match between Stoke and Bolton at Burnden Park turned to tragedy when poor crowd control and a dilapidated stadium contributed to the deaths of 33 fans. The disaster was the worst in British Football until the Ibrox Disaster in 1971. A memorial plaque stands at the site of the now demolished Burnden Park.
Burnden Park hosted the replay of the 1901 FA Cup Final between Sheffield United and Tottenham Hotspur. Tottenham came out 3-1 winners.
Burnden Park was in poor condition in the 1990's and the club decided to build a new ground. The move to a new ground coincided with the Wanderers rise up the league ladder and their final match at Burnden Park saw them crowned Division One...
