Description
Doncaster Rovers played their home matches at Belle Vue from 1922 until 2003. Peak capacity was 40,000 but the official highest attendance was 37,099 for a 1947 match against Hull City.
Belle Vue's pitch was built on a base of ash from the local coal tip.
Safety regulations reduced the capacity of Belle Vue to under 5,000 by 1987 when the Popular Stand was closed after mining subsidence undermined the foundations. A June 1995 fire that damaged the Main Stand was discovered to have been arson resulting in the arrest of the club chairman following a 1996 match against Fulham.
The ground was renovated and by 2003 capacity was over 11,000 but the old ground was in need of replacement. The Rovers new Keepmoat Stadium was finished in time for the club to begin playing matches there halfway through the 2006-2007 season. The final match at Belle Vue was a 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest.
