The grounds of Dundee United, Tannadice Park, and Dundee FC, Dens Park, are located approximately 200 metres from one another. Originally known as Clepington Park, Tannadice has been used for football since the 1870's and became home to Dundee United's precursor club Dundee Hibernian in 1909.
The Main Stand was constructed in 1962 and was the first cantilevered football stand in Scotland. Built as an all-seater, the stand covered half of the south sideline around the corner ending before East End terrace known as The Shed. Plans were made to renovate the ground in a similar style to the new Main Stand but financial difficulties put those plans on hold. Eventually two-and-a-half sides were completed and only The Shed remained by the 21st century.
