Boothferry Park was home to Hull City AFC from 1946 until 2002. The club began work on a new ground at the location as early as 1932 but was suspended within a year due to financing problems. Hull City AFC applied for a loan from the Football Association in 1939, intending to complete the ground in time for the 1941-42 season, but the Second World War stopped development. When the war ended work had to begin almost from scratch as the army had used the area as a tank park and the city itself had been heavily bombed. When the ground opened in August 1946 it was only partially complete but over the years it grew until peak capacity of over 55,000 was reached in 1949.
The stadium fell into disrepair over the years as anything but essential maintenance was beyond the club budget. The Boothferry Park sign was a symbol of the ground’s decline with illumination gradually failing and lettering falling off.
