Artist's Description

Maine Road is known as the former home of Manchester City but few people know that Manchester United played matches there as well. United played at Maine Road following World War Two, when Old Trafford was under repair due to damage sustained during the bombing of Manchester. The record attendance at an English League match was set at Maine Road in 1948 during a match between Manchester United and Arsenal. United returned to Old Trafford for the 1949-50 season.

The last goal at Maine Road scored by a Manchester City player was by the late Marc Vivien Foe - two months before he passed away playing for Cameroon in the Confederations Cup.

Plans to modernize Maine Road in the mid-90’s were cancelled as Manchester City faced financial problems. Ultimately the club moved to the City of Manchester Stadium, now renamed Etihad Stadium, and Maine Road was torn down to be replaced by housing.
