Description
Vale Park is the second highest ground in League football at 525 feet above sea level, only West Brom’s ground The Hawthorns is higher, although some claim the ground is in their place and 5 feet lower.
Port Vale played at The Old Recreation Ground in Stoke until their eviction in 1950. The club were given notice in 1944 and had time to construct a brand new stadium. Originally the ground was proposed to be “The Wembley of the North” with a capacity of 80,000 but was opened with a capacity of 40,000. Record attendance was close to 50,000 for a 1960 FA Cup Tie against Aston Villa, the modern era capacity is approximately 19,000.
