Description
White City Stadium was constructed for the 1908 London Olympics. Aside from the events one would expect to be held in an Olympic stadium the swimming was also held at the ground: a pool was dug in the field. Following the Olympics the stadium fell into limited use until it was taken over by the Greyhound Racing Association. Capacity was 93,000 and racing was held from 1927 until 1984.
Starting in the late 1920‘s and sporadically until closure White City Stadium hosted speedway motorcycle racing on a 380 meter long track. Teams in the British League as well as international and World Championship events were held at the ground until 1984 when White City was closed in preparation for demolition in 1985.
Queens Park Rangers played at White City from 1931-33 and again from 1962-63. The club was trying to grow their support base but attendances dropped below levels at their home ground at Loftus Road thus defeating the purpose of the switch. Some matches saw the ground at under ten percent capacity as supporters preferred the more intimate confines of Loftus Road.
