Description
The Saints played their football at The Dell for over 100 seasons from 1898 until 2001. The West Stand, constructed in 1927, was designed by Archibald Leitch. The Dell suffered damage during the Second World War with a bomb damaging the penalty area during an air raid in November 1940 and a fire damaging the West Stand in 1941.
The Dell was constructed on an odd-shaped parcel of land with the terraces at both ends shaped to fit. The Milton End had an arrangement of boxes halfway on the second tier, known as the "chocolate boxes," while the Archer Road End was angled to fit the lot with increasing rows from left to right.
