Description
Swindon Town FC began playing at the County Ground in 1896. Arkell's Brewery donated the initial funds to construct the first stand at the ground and their name is remembered in the current Arkell's Stand.
The record attendance of 32,000 was for a 1972 FA Cup 3rd Round Match against Arsenal.
During the Second World War County Ground was used as a POW Camp for a period. Huts were erected on the pitch and the club was later reimbursed.
