Description
Tottenham Hotspur moved to White Hart Lane in 1899 when their popularity strained facilities at their home ground of Northumberland Park. The club's success enabled them to purchase the freehold of the ground in 1905 before engaging Archibald Leitch to design a new West Stand which opened for the 1909-1910 season. Leitch also designed the North and South terraces were constructed in the early 1920's and completed his work on the ground with the opening of the East Stand in 1934.
Record attendance was 75,038 for an FA Cup match against Sunderland, slightly higher than the official capacity of White Hart Lane: 75,000. The ground capacity has been reduced to 36,284 leading the club to plan a new stadium on an expanded White Hart Lane site.
The Leitch stands survived renovations until the 1909 West Stand was demolished in 1980 and the replacement opened in 1982. The 1934 East Stand was renovated in 1989 leaving only the brick facade and lower structure of the original design. The end terraces were replaced with modern all-seater stands in the 1990's.
Our photos of the East Stand show the cockerel topping the press box. The cockerel was initially placed on the West Stand but was moved to the East Stand in 1958 when new floodlights were installed. The original cockerel can be seen in the renovated East Stand while a replacement adorns the roof.
