Description
Originally used for baseball during an effort to establish the game in the UK, the Baseball Ground was home to Derby County F.C. from 1895 until 1997 when the club moved to Pride Park Stadium. The football club was originally played on a cricket pitch at the Derby Racecourse Ground, located on the infield of the track, but had occasionally used the BBG prior to 1895 when cricket or horse racing prevented their use of the cricket ground.
Peak capacity at the ground was around 42,000 supporters but by the mid-1990's safety regulations had reduced capacity to less than 20,000. Initially it appeared the club would renovate the ground and football would continue its second century at the BBG but that was not economically viable so the decision was made to move to a new facility.
Legendary English manager Brian Clough and his partner Peter Taylor led Derby Country from the Second Division in 1969 and three years later the club won the League Championship. A second title followed in 1975 but by then Clough and Taylor had moved on and former player Dave MacKay, instrumental in the club's promotion to the top flight, was manager.
