Description
Hillsborough was the site of the worst stadium disaster in England on April 15th, 1989, when 96 Liverpool supporters died largely due to negligence by the police and failure to prevent overcrowding a fenced in stand.
Sheffield Wednesday moved to Hillsborough in 1899 and in 1912 employed Archibald Leitch to design improvements to the ground. The end result was one of the finest grounds of the era, elements of which remain in use today, albeit in renovated form.
Hillsborough has hosted 34 FA Cup semi-finals as well as matches for the 1966 World Cup and the 1996 European Championships hosted by England.
The east end terrace is known as the Spion Kop, not as famous as the Liverpool version but until 1993 the Kop at Hillsborough was the largest standing area in European football with a capacity around 22,000.
