Turf Moor has been the home of Burnley Football Club since 1883 but was the home of Burnley Cricket Club as early as 1833. The first stand was built in 1895 and in 1896 was the first Football League ground visited by a member of the Royal Family when Queen Victoria's grandson Prince Albert Victor watched Bolton defeat Burnley 4-3. The cricket club is located next door.
The record attendance at Turf Moor is just under 55,000 spectators, set during a 1924 FA Cup Third Round match between Burnley and Huddersfield Town that finished 1-0 for the home side. Turf Moor hosted a single FA Cup Semi-Final in 1922 with Huddersfield Town defeating Notts County 3-1. The capacity for that match was slightly reduced as the pitch was extended by a few yards removing a few rows in one end terrace to meet FA regulations for Cup Semi-Finals.
