Description
Stamford Bridge has been used for sporting activities since 1877, Chelsea FC have occupied the site since their founding in 1905. Part of the stadium is built of fill from the digging for London's Picadilly Underground line.
Stamford Bridge was the site three FA Cup Finals from 1920-1922, losing the match to the then brand new
Wembley Stadium for 1923. The Bridge also hosted FA Cup Semi-finals in 1912, 1920, 1923, 1925, 1927,
1975, 1976 and 1978.
Stamford Bridge has been the site of sports & events besides Chelsea football. The grounds has seen
athletics, greyhound racing, cricket, rugby union, American football, baseball and speedway motorcycle
racing. The greyhound & speedway track disappeared over the course of renovations starting in the
1970�s.
November 13th, 1945, Stamford Bridge was the venue for the first match by a Soviet team against an
English First Division side when Chelsea faced Dynamo Moscow. The official crowd was just under 75,000
but some accounts claim more than 100,000 people packed into, and in some cases onto the roof of,
Stamford Bridge. The match ended in a 3-3 draw.
