Originally the ground was known as Ash Lane after the road next to the ground, when the name of the road was changed to Haig Avenue the ground followed suit. Southport FC began playing at (Ash Lane) Haig Avenue in 1905, 16 years before the club joined the Football League.
Record attendance at the ground is 20,010 achieved on two separate occasions for FA Cup matches is in 1932 & 1968 against Newcastle & Everton respectively. Current capacity at Haig Avenue is 7,000.
in 1978 Southport FC were the last club voted out of the Football League and their place was taken by Wigan Athletic. The club still play at Haig Avenue but under a sponsorship arrangement the ground is known as Merseyrail Community Stadium.
