Stoke City’s Victoria Ground was the home of the club for almost 120 years from 1878 to 1997. Stoke returned to the Football League in 1919 and the ground underwent almost continuos improvement according to the standards of the time. Capacity peaked at just over 51,000 and record attendance was reached against Arsenal in 1937. The
post-World War Two era saw more work on the stadium, including floodlights, a new stand and concrete in the standing paddock.
The Victoria Ground was badly damaged in January 1976 when hurricane force winds hit the area. The damage to the ground included a section of roof blown off a stand and the first efforts to repair the damage were delayed when scaffolding collapsed on the work site leading to the postponement of an FA Cup tie against Tottenham. The ground was repaired just under three-weeks later in time for the rescheduled match against Spurs.
