Description
Birmingham City FC moved into St. Andrew’s in 1905 and the official capacity of the ground was 75,000 spectators.
When the Britain entered the Second World War in September 1939 football, and other sport, was banned by the government. The decision was taken a few weeks later to allow football matches but at a reduced capacity; however St. Andrew’s remained closed as it was located near an arms factory targeted by enemy bombing. Ultimately the ground was allowed to open in March 1940 but suffered over 20 bomb hits over the next 18 months.
