Description
St. James’ Park in Newcastle-upon-Tyne has been used for football since 1880, with Newcastle United taking up residence in 1892. Disputes with local residents and government blocked redevelopment of the ground until the early 1970’s.
The lack of development at St. James’ Park between 1922 and 1972 prevented the club from serious consideration as a venue for the 1966 World Cup. The ground hosted matches for both the 1996 European Championship, the 2012 Olympic soccer competition and the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
